Congresswoman-elect Mia Love of Utah’s fourth district is the first black female Republican elected to Congress.

During a CNN interview regarding her election, host John Berman called her election “historic” and asked “why it took so long” for Republicans to elect a black woman.

Love responded that her election had “nothing to do with race.”

“I wasn’t elected because of the color of my skin. I wasn’t elected because of my gender. I was elected because of the solutions that I put at the table, because I promised I would run a positive issues-oriented campaign and that’s what resonated,” said Love.
