The number of immigrants living illegally in the United States has leveled off in recent years, but those who remain are staying much longer than they did a decade ago, according to a recent study.
The number of people living in the U.S. illegally last year was steady at 11.3 million, the Pew Research Center reported Sept. 3. But in 2013, illegal immigrants had been living in the country for an average of 12.7 years, Pew found, up from a median of less than eight years a decade earlier.
In fact, more than 60 percent of the nation’s illegal immigrants have lived in the United States for at least a decade, up from about 35 percent in 2000, according to Pew.
Pew’s findings come as President Obama is weighing executive action to further stem deportations of illegal immigrants.
