Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, along with Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott traveled to San Antonio on Monday to assess the growing “humanitarian crisis” that has overwhelmed the U.S.-Mexico border.

Cruz described the massive increase of minors illegally crossing the border as “heartbreaking” after touring the Texan Air Force facility that is lodging nearly 1,200 illegal immigrants.

Cruz said the United States must stop this problem by securing the border and not offering amnesty, which he claims “only incentivizes more and more people to violate the law and, in this instance, endanger the safety and lives of their kids.”

The trip follows the letter Cruz sent to Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson last week, pushing the administration to allow Texas to deal with its pervasive immigration crisis.
