The growing socialist wing of the Democratic Party has made it evident that national immigration policy could return to what it was under former President Joe Biden’s administration, or worse, if Democrats regain control.
With a slim Republican majority in the House and growing momentum for certain Democratic Senate candidates, sanctuary policies, pathways to citizenship, open borders, and the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement could soon become reality.
Congressional Democrats and Democratic candidates alike have already promised to extend amnesty, protect illegals, and create pathways to citizenship.
“When I am chair of the Immigration Subcommittee, we will pass permanent protections and pathways to citizenship for immigrant families,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., said earlier this year.
Florida State Rep. Angie Nixon, who is now running for U.S. Senate as the Democratic nominee, said, “there needs to be a clear, comprehensive, and compassionate pathway to citizenship, especially for folks like Haitians, Venezuelans, and Syrians.”
In May, the Democratic Socialist of America, of which Nixon is a part, called measures to strengthen security a “complete capitulation to xenophobia and the Republican Party,” leading the Democratic National Convention to adopt resolutions to “abolish” Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

This possibility has struck fear into the eyes of Republicans and many Americans.
Rep. Ben Cline, vice chairman of the Republican Study Committee, told the Daily Signal that “four long years of Democrat control” led to “criminal illegal aliens roaming around our country, terrorizing our communities,” adding that more “far left sanctuary policies will continue to put American families at risk.”
His colleague on the committee, Rep. Rick W. Allen, R-Ga., told the Daily Signal, “The nationwide uptick in left-wing leaders who disregard federal law and shield unlawful aliens from federal immigration enforcement is abhorrent.”
Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., told The Daily Signal that the policies mentioned above only “hurt Americans.”
In 2026, all Senate Democrats repeatedly voted against voter integrity legislation requiring voters to present identification and proof of citizenship to vote, known as the SAVE America Act.
Despite claims that the legislation could disenfranchise black voters, those arguments have been refuted by black congressmen who lived through the Jim Crow era, including Rep. Burgess Owens, R-Utah.
In 2026, every Democrat also voted against the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, which helped codify border security gains made under the Trump administration, and the Secure America Act, which fully funds the Department of Homeland Security through the end of the Trump administration.
In 2025, 156 House Democrats voted against the Laken Riley Act.
The law, named after a Georgia nursing student who was killed by an illegal alien who had previously been released from custody on shoplifting charges, requires federal immigration authorities to detain without bond undocumented or inadmissible noncitizens who have been arrested or charged with certain crimes.
“Laken’s killer should never have been released after committing crimes in the U.S., and tragically, her case is not isolated,” Republican Study Committee Chairman August Pfluger, R-Texas, told the Daily Signal. “Sanctuary city policies continue to put Americans at risk.”
Rep. Rich McCormick, R-Ga., echoed his colleague’s claim, telling the Daily Signal that Riley’s murder “was a devastating reminder that the consequences of a broken border do not stay at the border; they can reach into our own backyards and destroy American families.”
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., told the Daily Signal that Riley’s murder was a result of “Democrats’ sanctuary policies and soft-on-crime laws continue to put American citizens at risk,” adding that more Americans will pay “with their lives” if Democrats regain control of the federal government.
As it stands, the midterm elections this November are crucial in determining who controls the final two years of the Trump presidency.
Democrats have made it clear that, should they take power, they will work tirelessly to protect an unlawful population from deportation while spending taxpayer dollars to bring more Democrat voters into the country, regardless of their history or intentions in the United States.
