‘Aren’t the Same Thing’: Black Congressman Shoots Down Jim Crow 2.0 Claim
FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—A black congressman who lived through the Jim Crow era told the Daily Signal that the Left’s claim that requiring a voter to present identification before casting a ballot is an “elitist claim” used to gather support for their “Godless” policies.
“What they [Republicans] are proposing in this so-called SAVE Act is like Jim Crow 2.0,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said earlier this year.
Rep. Burgess Owens, R-Utah, categorized Schumer’s opposition to the legislation as a product of the “elitist mentality.”
“Democrats are saying that African Americans and women are not as smart as they are,” Owens, one of the first black Americans to attend the University of Miami before playing for the National Football League, continued.
“What’s actually limiting black people is what I experienced back in the day. Black people couldn’t be quarterbacks, linebackers, or other positions,” Owens continued. “When I went to the University of Miami, they put me in classes where I couldn’t succeed or be a marine biologist. These two things aren’t the same.”
Owens continued by explaining that the narrative the Left is pushing is a “mindset that what’s good for them is not good for us.”

“They just want to cheat, lie, and steal,” Owens continued. “And the way they get to power is by taking away the vote of the American people.”
The SAVE America Act continues to stall in the Senate after it was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives numerous times. Schumer pledged that no Senate Democrat will vote for the legislation, which would require voters to provide proof of citizenship to register and identification to vote.
However, a recent poll showed that at least 71% of Americans support enforcing voter ID. A different poll showed at least 57% of Republican voters fear that illegal voters are going to take away the voice of American citizens.
“Now we’re starting to understand why the Democratic Party opened the gates to millions and millions of people to come into our country, and they didn’t care if they were going to bring bad people into our country,” the former Super Bowl champion-turned-Republican congressman continued.
“They care more about wanting to get enough of these folks here to vote for them so that they can stay in power,” Owens added.
Owens explained that Democrats need illegal voters because it is the only way they can gather enough support for the “Godless ideology” that the Left embraces, such as “communism, socialism, and Marxism,” because it “doesn’t play well with the concept of America’s culture.”
Under President Joe Biden, it was estimated that over 8.5 million aliens entered the United States illegally through the southwest border.
Less than two weeks ago, New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced that over 6,600 noncitizens had been accidentally registered to vote while applying for a driver’s license.
In the same week, the Department of Homeland Security accused Pennsylvania of allowing over 14,000 illegal aliens to vote in a previous election.
