Progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed narrowly won the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s Senate seat on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
He beat out Rep. Haley Stevens by fewer than 15,000 votes, or 1% of the vote. Democratic state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, who dropped out weeks before the primary election but was still on the ballot, received 4% of the vote. This comes after polling from last week showed El-Sayed dominating Stevens in the race.
El-Sayed now faces Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in the November general election.
An Emerson College Polling/WLNS/WOODTV survey released two days after the Democratic Party primary debate showed El-Sayed handily defeating Stevens 54% to 39%. A separate 6% of voters said they were undecided, while about 2% backed McMorrow.
Prior to the debate, the two seemed to be neck and neck in various polls. A survey conducted by the Glengariff Group on behalf of Business Leaders for Michigan and the Michigan Education Association, released last week, showed El-Sayed trailing Stevens by roughly 4%. Eleven percent of respondents reported being undecided.
A different poll from 270toWin showed El-Sayed leading Stevens 37.4% to 35.8%.

El-Sayed was endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who identifies as a democratic socialist. He campaigned numerous times alongside House “Squad” members including Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass.
El-Sayed also appeared at campaign events with controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, who once said the United States “deserved 9/11.”
Throughout the campaign, he repeatedly advocated for parts of the Democratic Socialist of America agenda, such as Medicare for All, increased government spending for social programs, ending the war in Iran, and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
El-Sayed has also previously touted defunding the police, but he did not address those past remarks on the campaign trail.
The possibility of an El-Sayed victory in November also concerns Jewish Republican lawmakers and conservative strategists, who have referred to him as a “terrorist sympathizer.”
This spring, a leaked video of El-Sayed talking to his campaign staffers showed the candidate refusing to condemn the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei because it would “upset” some of his voters.
When a Lebanese man with relatives directly fighting for Hezbollah drove his car into a synagogue before attempting to open fire, El-Sayed was caught in a similar scandal, saying that condemning the attack was a “risk,” as first reported by Punchbowl News.
Stevens, on the other hand, was seen by voters as more of a centrist democrat.
Leading up to election night, Stevens counted on the support of longtime top Democrat politicians, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Sen. Gary Peters, and former Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
During her time in the House of Representatives, Stevens has voted consistently with the Democratic Party, earning a 5% score on the Heritage Foundation’s legislative scorecard. According to the scorecard, her record is consistent with only 10% of House Democrats.
In the 118th Congress, Stevens voted against the SAVE America Act, key election integrity legislation championed by President Donald Trump. She also voted against legislation to prohibit the Federal Reserve from creating a centralized digital currency. She strongly opposes adding a citizenship question to the U.S. Census as well as efforts to exclude noncitizens from congressional apportionment.
In the 119th Congress, she introduced articles of impeachment against Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
November and Beyond
The matchup between Rogers and El-Sayed could prove to be a close race. Rogers previously ran for the state’s other senate seat against Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., in 2024. Slotkin won the race by .3%.
The outcome of this race could be key to determining which party holds the majority in the Senate in the 120th Congress.
President Donald Trump celebrated El-Sayed’s victory on Truth Social. “Great news for the Republican Party,” he wrote. “El-Sayed, a Communist loser who hates Jews and Israel, is the projected winner in his race.” The president believes El-Sayed will have a tougher time winning the general election in November than Stevens. The president attributed the intensifying “far-left policies” of the “dumocrats” as the reason for Republicans potentially flipping the Senate seat in Michigan in November. Recent polls have shown that El-Sayed trails by double digits when matched up against Rogers.
