Fox News Delivered Its Highest-Rated Fourth of July in Network History During America 250

Fox News Channel dominated television ratings in July, highlighted by its highest-rated Fourth of July coverage in network history, according to Nielsen Media Research. Several broadcast networks, conversely, suffered historic lows, further demonstrating the steady shift in American TV viewing habits.
Record Fourth of July Ratings
After America celebrated its 250th anniversary with, in all likelihood, a world record fireworks display, Fox News can now celebrate its highest-rated coverage of the Fourth of July in its almost 30-year network history, reaching a peak of 5.7 million viewers and 701,000 viewers in the 25-to-54 age demographic during President Donald Trump’s speech from 11:15 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. ET.
Special coverage hosted by Bret Baier, Sean Hannity, Dana Perino, Harris Faulkner, and Brian Kilmeade from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. ET secured 3.9 million viewers, commanding the attention of an impressive 73 percent of cable-news viewers at that time.
Fox Outpaces Broadcast Networks in July Primetime
For the second month in a row, Fox News delivered in primetime. Despite competing against networks with broader household reach, Fox News once again outpaced the major broadcast networks.
In weekday primetime, Fox News averaged 2.643 million viewers in July, surpassing broadcast giants NBC (2.452 million), ABC (2.272 million), and CBS (1.921 million).
CBS and ABC’s news programs delivered historic lows as CBS posted its lowest-rated primetime month since 1992 with 1.991 million viewers. CBS “Evening News” had its worst month since Tony Dokoupil took over, with 3.8 million viewers, while CBS “Mornings” had its worst month in history with 1.6 million viewers and 240,000 in the 25-to-54 demographic.

ABC also had its worst primetime month since 1992 with 391,000 viewers in the target demographic.
Fox News, on the other hand, continued its steady performance. Its No. 1 program, “The Five,” had 3.3 million viewers and 300,000 in the target demographic, leading all cable news programs and even overtaking broadcast programs such as “Big Brother” on CBS (3.2 million viewers) and NBC’s “Sunday Night Baseball” (2.8 million viewers).
Other notable successful Fox News programs for the month of July included “Gutfeld!”, which continued its dominance in late night, crushing its nearest competitor ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” by a million viewers. (2.6 million viewers vs. 1.6 million)
“Special Report with Bret Baier” (6 p.m. ET) continues to close the gap with its broadcast competition, averaging 2.5 million viewers and 224,000 in the key demographic.
Cable News Domination
“FOX & Friends” (6-9 a.m. ET) remained the top morning cable news program in July, marking its 65th consecutive month as the top-rated show in both total viewers and the key 25-to-54 demographic.
The program averaged 1.3 million viewers and 124,000 viewers in the advertiser-coveted demographic, surpassing the combined viewership of CNN and MSNBC.
FNC’s weekend programming also continued its stellar performance, as it won every hour in total viewers and viewers in the 25-to-54 demographic, defeating CNN and MS NOW by double to triple-digit margins in both categories on both days.
Kayleigh McEnany’s “Saturday in America” (10 a.m. to noon ET) was the most-viewed show on cable news on Saturdays, garnering more than 1.6 million viewers.
FOX News Live (noon to 2 p.m. ET) averaged 1.4 million viewers during the month, while “FOX News Saturday Night with Jimmy Failla” led FNC’s weekend primetime lineup with 1.22 million viewers.
“Life, Liberty & Levin” (8 p.m. ET) followed with 1.187 million viewers, while “My View with Lara Trump” (9 p.m. ET) drew 1.116 million viewers.
The top five programs in cable news, regardless of channel, were:
- “The Five” (3.309 million average viewers)
- “Jesse Watters Primetime” (2.976 million)
- “Gutfeld!” (2.633 million)
- “Hannity” (2.554 million)
- “Special Report” (2.519 million)
