My newest book,“Love & Go: 12 Powerful Truths for a Blessed Life,” weaves together the call to “Love” and the mission to “Go,” creating a transformative guide for developing a personal relationship with God and a faith lived with purpose and power. The Power of Prayer
Prayer is simply communication with our Creator, God, that has the power to change our hearts, lives, and the world. As the apostle James wrote, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
As I began growing in my relationship with God through a fraternity Bible study, two mentors, Jeff and Gregg, challenged me to do more than read Scripture—they encouraged me to talk with God every day and listen for His voice. In other words, to pray.
I had recently discovered the power of praise, which itself is a form of prayer. However, there was so much more I needed to learn about prayer and communicating with God.

I grew up in a faith tradition where prayer was mostly something you did before a meal or once a week at church. The prayers at church were usually read aloud and recited word for word, often in archaic English.
After my parents experienced a spiritual awakening in the mid-1970s, they began praying out loud, and their prayers were easy to understand and felt like direct conversations with God. Similarly, when Jeff and Gregg opened and closed each week’s fraternity/sorority Bible study, they prayed out loud, talking to God like He was someone they actually knew.
Wow! I thought. I never knew you could talk to God like that. I soon discovered that even Jesus’ closest followers had a lot to learn about prayer. At one point, they turned to Jesus and said, “Lord, teach us to pray.”
Clearly, they had questions about prayer, just like I did—and maybe you do too.
The Power of Faith
Faith is a gift from God that can empower us to overcome worry and fear and enable us to be and do all that God created us to be and do. As the apostle Paul wrote, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
After dating Gayle for about three years, when it became clear that our relationship was getting serious, she told me there was an important issue she wanted to discuss.
She told me about a surgery she had during her senior year of high school that would likely limit her ability to get pregnant and have children. I felt Gayle’s pain, and my mind raced with thoughts of a future without children.
I loved Gayle, yet I knew I wanted to have children and a big family someday. I remember sharing the situation with my mom and dad. As usual, my mom gently shared perspective and grace.
“Frankie, do you love Gayle?” my mom asked.
“Yes, Mom, I do,” I replied.
“Do you have faith and trust in God?” she asked.
I said, “Yes, Mom, I think so.”
I clearly remember the night I was driving to pick up Gayle to take her to dinner and then ask her to marry me. I had prayed long and hard about this decision and knew I needed to rely on what little faith I had to overcome my fears.
When we got married, we had no idea if or how we would have children, but I had peace. God, in His sovereignty, chose to bless us with two natural-born sons (with a little medical fertility assistance), as well as an adopted daughter and son.
It’s amazing what God can do with even a little faith.
The Power of Giving
It is more blessed to give than to receive, yet God is so generous that you can never outgive Him. While serving in Japan one summer, I met another college student named Scott. One day, I noticed his shirt and mentioned how much I liked it. We were about the same size, and the next day, he handed the shirt to me, cleaned and folded, and said, “I want you to have this.” A few days later, I saw him do the same thing with his sunglasses.
I couldn’t help but ask him why he was giving away all of his nice stuff. He explained that he had decided to make a verse in the Gospel of Luke his theme for the summer, and he challenged me and the others in our group to memorize it.
The verse captured the words of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke when He said, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
By the end of the summer, I had memorized that verse. Little did I know how much it would shape my thinking about giving for decades to come.
