A small corner of south Orange County, California, has drawn national attention after reports of multiple cases of a rare childhood cancer. Residents say the worries go beyond one diagnosis and point to a broader set of possible environmental factors in the community.
At least six children from Ladera Ranch have been diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare cancer that primarily affects bones and soft tissue. With only about 200 to 240 cases being reported nationwide each year, the issue gained wider notice after the mother of 17-year-old Brody Matteson spoke publicly about her son’s death in March.
In addition to Ewing sarcoma, residents have brought up concerns about brain tumors, breast cancer, rashes, and other health issues. Attempting to find a source for their issues, local conversations have centered on pesticide use in the area.
Records from the community’s homeowners association, the Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corp., show landscaping areas have been treated with chemicals, including Lifeline, Avalon Gopher Grain Bait, ZP Rodent Oat Bait, and others.
Residents also have raised questions about water quality, large cell towers in the community, the use of artificial turf, and a nearby landfill.
Local and state officials have acknowledged the concerns. California Republican state Assemblymember Kate Sanchez announced Monday that she has asked Gov. Gavin Newsom to examine the issue. Assemblywoman Diane Dixon stated Tuesday during a town hall meeting that she is working with fellow lawmakers on possible legislation addressing heavy pesticide use.

With a push to launch a state review already underway, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli has also asked the Environmental Protection Agency to investigate potential factors that could be involved.
Since the public outcry against pesticide use, Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corp. announced that it would be pausing pesticide use in certain areas for 60 days.
