Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer showed a “flash of statesmanship” when he decided to oppose President Obama’s nuclear weapons agreement with Iran.

“He made a decision of statesmanship, not partisanship,” Huckabee told The Daily Signal in an interview at the recent RedState Gathering in Atlanta. “He did something against his president, against his party but for his country. This is what we elect people to do, to take a principled stand. I believe that’s what he has done.”

The question now will be how much influence Schumer’s decision to buck the president has on the rest of the Democrat Party. Huckabee is hoping it’s significant. “Chuck Schumer is the intellectual leader of the Senate Democrats.”

Congress will pass a resolution of approval or disapproval sometime next month. At this point, it’s expected that both the House and Senate will vote against the deal. However, with President Obama set with his veto pen, it will be up to Democrats whether the votes are there to override the veto. That will require a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress.
