Abby Martinez lost custody of her daughter Yaeli to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services because Martinez did not fully support her daughter “transitioning” to a boy.
When she was 16, Yaeli moved out of her mother’s home and later changed her name to Andrew. Yaeli began taking cross-sex hormones but still struggled with depression.
At 19, Yaeli took her own life.
