Left-Leaning News Outlet Stealth-Edits Video of Professor Asking Audience to ‘F— Up’ ICE Officer
A professor of pan-African studies with a leadership role in Black Lives Matter urged her audience to “f— up” an officer with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Sunday, stating that there should be nowhere the agent could “go where they are comfortable.”
Melina Abdullah, a professor of Pan-African studies at California State University, Los Angeles, identified the ICE agent by name, mentioning the hotel he was staying at.
She urged her audience to “study guerrilla warfare” and use “every single tool in your toolbox.”
“So, when I say f— him up—and I say f— Brian Palacios up, who may be staying at the Hilton Garden Inn—when I say f— him up, I mean in many ways, they don’t get to do their shit invisibly,” she added. “There should be nowhere that they go where they are comfortable.”
Abdullah spoke at the La Defensa del Pueblo Summit, organized by the immigrant rights group Ventura County Defensa, with union support.
Video Raises Questions
BreakThrough News, an outlet with ties to event speakers, released what appears to be the official recording of the panel, though it does not include all of Abdullah’s reported remarks.

Stu Smith, an investigative analyst at The Manhattan Institute’s news outlet City Journal, posted a video compilation of her remarks on X. His video includes clips that appear to have been deleted from the BreakThrough News version.
The official video contains apparent jumps at the 29:33 mark and the 1:11:11 mark, while overlapping with Smith’s footage. The jumps eliminate Abdullah’s urging the audience to “f— up” Palacios and mentioning his likely location.
BreakThrough News did not respond to the Daily Signal’s request for comment on whether the omitted portions were present in the original recording and whether any individual or organization requested edits.
Smith told the Daily Signal that he was watching the event in real time.
He provided the Daily Signal with a copy of what he described as the original recording, which includes the clips from his X video.
“Her comments may be the worst thing I have ever seen live, and I have been on Zoom calls with Hamas and the Weather Underground,” Smith told the Daily Signal. “The whole summit was an anti-ICE event that openly praised militancy against ICE.”
He said activists “hold their spiciest conferences during holidays” so they go largely unnoticed.
Manolo De Los Santos, executive director of The People’s Forum, spoke on the panel with Abdullah. Both The People’s Forum and BreakThrough News are part of the network of activist groups funded by Shanghai-based billionaire Neville Roy Singham.
Who Is Melina Abdullah?
Abdullah’s profile on the Cal State LA website says she sees her teaching role as “intrinsically linked to broader struggles for the liberation of oppressed people.”
The profile states that she “was among the original group of organizers that convened to form Black Lives Matter and continues to serve as a Los Angeles chapter lead and contributes to the national leadership.”
Keith Porter
Abdullah’s remarks centered on Palacios, an ICE agent who fatally shot 43-year-old Keith Porter on New Year’s Eve. The professor mentioned Porter and supported a petition urging Palacios’ prosecution.
The Department of Homeland Security said Palacios encountered Porter holding a rifle and ordered him to put the weapon down. When Porter allegedly failed to comply, the agent fired in self-defense, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Porter’s family disputes the account.
“We don’t believe this narrative of self-defense,” Jamal Tooson, the attorney who represents the family, said.
The family said District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s office confirmed that it is still investigating the shooting. The office has yet to bring charges against Palacios.
Cal State LA’s Response
California State University and Cal State LA issued a joint statement about Abdullah’s remarks.
“Cal State LA is aware of comments attributed to a faculty member at an off-campus event that was not sponsored by, affiliated with, or authorized by Cal State LA or the CSU,” a spokesperson told the Daily Signal. “The faculty member was attending in an individual capacity, not representing the university.”
“The university respects free speech, including speech with which the university strongly disagrees,” the spokesperson added. “The CSU and Cal State LA do not agree with or condone hatred, threats, or violence of any kind.”
“Cal State LA remains fully committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning and working environment for all members of the Golden Eagle community,” the statement concluded.
During the first year of the Trump administration, ICE agents experienced a 1,300% increase in assaults, a 3,200% increase in vehicular attacks, and an 8,000% increase in death threats.
Abdullah herself did not respond to the Daily Signal’s request for comment by publication time.
