As Bernie Moreno campaigns for Republican Mike Rogers ahead of the open U.S. Senate race in nearby Michigan, he’s caught the attention of Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, who disparaged the Ohio senator for having worked at a used car dealership.
The exchange began when Rogers posted a photo of Moreno standing alongside him at a campaign rally saying the Michigan Republican would be “100% focused on the state of Michigan, not on Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood and all those other things that are on the other side of the globe.”
Moreno also described the election as “America and Michigan first,” as he pointed to Rogers.
El-Sayed did not take too kindly to that, posting on X, “Used car salesman sells used car.”
While El-Sayed sought to turn Moreno’s past profession as the owner of a used car dealership against him, it might have backfired.

While Moreno acknowledged he “sold cars,” he accused El-Sayed of “sell[ing] open borders, higher taxes, government run healthcare, antisemitism, sharia law, and policies that ship auto jobs to China,” and even accused him of wanting to “kill” the American dream, predicting Rogers would come out victorious.
El-Sayed has talked considerably about “Medicare for All,” which is one of the three priorities listed on his website.
As Moreno’s post gained attention on X, the importance of the auto industry in Michigan was brought to the forefront. Michigan is the top auto manufacturing state in the country. It’s similarly big in Ohio, which ranks third behind Indiana.
The Democrats for Mike Rogers X group responded, “We wonder if Abdul remembers he’s running for Senate in Michigan. He thinks being a used car salesman is a bad job. … There are 10,000 Michiganders who work in the used car industry. He hates working-class Michiganders.”
The Senate race in Michigan is regarded as a “toss-up” race by Cook Political Report. According to RealClearPolling, El-Sayed leads Rogers by an average of +2.5%. In the primary, however, he only ended up beating Rep. Haley Stevens with a margin of victory of +1.7%, despite having led by +10.2% going into the August primary.
El-Sayed has also characterized Rogers as living “lifestyles of the rich and famous” because he has a yacht and property in Florida. El-Sayed, meanwhile, through his wife, has properties overseas.
The “used car salesman” post is not the only back-and-forth between Moreno and El-Sayed on X this week. As El-Sayed mocked Rogers for campaigning with President Donald Trump, Moreno called to mind El-Sayed’s association with Hasan Piker, the controversial left-wing Twitch streamer.
Piker has a history of making concerning remarks about the United States and Israel, including saying in 2019 that America “deserved 9/11.”
Moreno was first elected in 2024, after he beat then-Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown, who is seeking a comeback in this year’s special election against Republican Sen. Jon Husted.
