Human Rights Campaign Chief Compares ICE Patrols to Lynch Mobs

Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson Saturday compared Immigration and Customs Enforcement patrols to lynch mobs and likened current political battles over LGBTQ+ issues to the civil rights movement.

Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ activist group, has sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s policies on transgender issues, including restrictions on military service for people diagnosed with gender dysphoria and opposition to transgender medical procedures on minors.

“This is a dark time in America,” Robinson said at the Human Rights Campaign annual dinner in Washington, D.C. “They say that history doesn’t repeat, but it often rhymes, that the ghosts of our unsettled sins continue to haunt us.”

“The story of Nolan Wells echoes the story of Emmett Till,” she said. Wells, an 18-year-old, mysteriously died in Georgia this summer, while the 14-year-old Till’s 1955 murder became a rallying point for the civil rights movement. “The ICE patrols look a little too similar to lynch mobs. The purging of the voter rolls looks just like poll taxes, and the attacks on our trans children, they are just as haunting.”

Robinson repeatedly framed current conflicts over transgender policies as a continuation of historic civil rights struggles, arguing that government actions targeting transgender identities echoed forms of discrimination previously directed at black Americans.

Trump administration policies recognize sex as male or female, and not based on gender identity, along with restrictions on transgender medical interventions for minors. Administration officials have argued that their policies protect women’s access to sex-segregated spaces and prevent children from undergoing medical interventions that have little-to-no evidence-based benefit.

Robinson quoted the transgender activist Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, who said, “They keep continually trying to eradicate us.”

“That quote could have been from 1969 but it wasn’t—it was from present day,” the Human Rights Campaign president said.

She noted Trump’s policy disqualifying people with gender dysphoria from military service and laws penalizing controversial transgender medical interventions on minors.

“We are fighting for our rights with the full weight and force of the United States government working against us,” Robinson said.

The Human Rights Campaign dinner also featured Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, who condemned the political messaging of “family values” in other states.

She said “too many states” are “defunding their local public schools, poisoning air and water, making everyday life a lot more expensive, and they want to blame their problems on people different from them, in hope that we are all desperate or hopeless enough to fall for it.”

“That’s what all this ‘family values’ stuff is really about,” the governor argued. “We all saw recently that states like Alabama, Utah, and Arkansas renamed June to ‘Fidelity Month’ and ‘Nuclear Family Month.’ It’s pathetic.”

She said the “biggest threat to American families” comes not from the LGBTQ+ activist movement but from Trump administration policies.

The dinner came as Human Rights Campaign and other LGBTQ activist groups have repeatedly clashed with the Trump administration over transgender policies involving military service, sports participation, school policies, and medical interventions for minors.
