Trump Agenda on Track With Swift Cabinet Confirmations

Senate Republicans have had a productive month confirming President Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees to enact his MAGA agenda, and Trump has just three Cabinet nominees remaining to be confirmed: the secretaries of labor, commerce, and education. 

Reacting to the breakneck pace of confirmations, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., praised his colleagues in a Fox News interview.

“Our members have been really good. And I think the president, in the end, is going to have the team he wants to implement his agenda, which we fully support, and we’re going to do everything we can to see that that gets done as well by supporting him, where necessary, with legislative initiatives and activity as well,” Thune said.

The fast-paced confirmations were able to be accomplished by Thune’s resolve to keep the Senate in session during late nights and even weekends if Democrats continued to stonewall. That has melted much of the opposition.

The majority leader has since prioritized Senate floor time to get the Trump nominees the votes they are entitled to.

“President Trump picked strong, bold nominees to fill his Cabinet. Republicans are confirming them at record speed because that’s what President Trump and the American people deserve. Republicans are taking advantage of every moment and pushing past Democrat filibusters. We will keep our foot on the gas until the president’s entire Cabinet is confirmed,” Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., the Senate majority whip, told The Daily Signal. 

In terms of Cabinet-level and other high-ranking positions that still need to be confirmed, Republicans just voted the nomination of Kash Patel to be FBI director out of the Senate Judiciary Committee, making way for a full floor vote on his appointment. 

The Senate still also needs to vote on Elise Stefanik, Trump’s pick to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, as well as hundreds of political appointee positions. However, the quick confirmation hearings despite Democratic senators’ stonewalling is notable for Senate leadership. Before Trump took office, there were some fears that much of his Cabinet would not be in place for the critical first 100 days of his administration.

Republican senators have remained unified despite intense pressure, especially in regard to the nominations of Pete Hegseth to be defense secretary, Tulsi Gabbard to be director of national intelligence, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be Department of Health and Human Services chief.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the former Republican majority leader, is a notable exception, having voted against all three of those Trump nominees. During Trump’s 2017-2021 term, his last Cabinet-level official was confirmed in May 2017. By contrast, it took President Joe Biden had to wait only until March 2021 to complete his Cabinet. If Republicans can keep up the current pace, they will have confirmed the president’s Cabinet at a faster rate than either Trump’s first term and Biden’s sole term.
