NRSC Hits El-Sayed for Pledging Support to Iran’s Revolutionary ‘Counterparts,’ the Muslim Brotherhood

Fresh after his primary victory, the National Republican Senatorial Committee released a new ad slamming the Democrat candidate for Michigan’s Senate seat, Abdul El-Sayed, for his pledge of support for the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.

“He pledged support for the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, a designated terrorist org,” the ad said, describing El-Sayed as “the most radical senate candidate in America.”

The NRSC’s claim comes from an op-ed El-Sayed wrote in 2011, while an associate professor at Columbia University, urging the United States to back the Muslim Brotherhood protesters in Egypt at the time, whom he referred to as revolutionary “counterparts” of the Iranian regime.

In 2012, the group, designated as a terrorist organization by President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, successfully overthrew the Islamist regime of Hosni Mubarak and installed Mohamed Morsi to serve as the country’s president.

As his first reason for urging the U.S. to support the Muslim Brotherhood protesters, El-Sayed wrote in his op-ed, uncovered by conservative personality Laura Loomer, that the Mubarak regime has maintained “peace with Israel.”

He then countered U.S. concerns that if it were to support the Muslim Brotherhood protesters in Egypt, it could empower Hamas to take stronger control of Gaza, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and further instability in the region. El-Sayed called these unsubstantiated claims.

The Muslim Brotherhood ruled over Egypt from 2012 to 2013. Today, the Islamic Republic is still in power in Iran and is currently at war with the United States, Israel, and other Middle Eastern countries, while Hamas continues to exert control over the Gaza Strip and has carried out numerous terrorist genocidal attacks against Israeli civilians, such as the Oct. 7 massacre.

Hamas’ political wing is also still in control of the Gaza Strip.

El-Sayed continued, writing that “even if the Muslim Brotherhood were to take power, there are several reasons why the ensuing state would look nothing like Iran,” because the Muslim Brotherhood is a “Sunni organization” which, by nature, is less hierarchical than the Shiite brand of the region.”

“Hence, the concept of a supreme leader or theocratic figurehead is improbable under the Muslim Brotherhood,” he continued. “Second, as it stands, the Muslim Brotherhood lacks a Supreme Leader akin to the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran. Thus, the movement will not be able to consolidate power as readily in these turbulent times as their counterparts did in Iran.”

“It is in America’s interest to support Egyptian protesters’ efforts to achieve the ability to speak their mind and have a say in how they are governed,” he continued in his op-ed.

“If the U.S. truly wants to be the beacon of justice and liberty that it claims it does, it would behoove the Obama administration to fall decisively behind the protesters in Egypt,” El-Sayed concluded.

El-Sayed’s opponent in November, former Rep. Mike Rogers, noted the Democrat’s affinity for the Muslim Brotherhood after last night’s primary.

“Abdul isn’t just another liberal. He’s an extremist,” Rogers said in a statement posted on X. “He pledged his support to the Muslim Brotherhood and campaigns with people who refuse to condemn terrorism.”

The Daily Signal has reached out to the El-Sayed campaign for comment but has not received a reply by publication.
