Why State Department Says Cuba Poses Massive Threat to United States

For seven decades, Cuba has funded political terrorists seeking to take down the United States, according to a new report from the State Department. 

The State Department released a report Monday saying that Cuba has deeply penetrated the American political institutions, leftist organizations, universities, and even spy networks. 

The report highlighted alleged Cuban espionage, saying the regime “perfected a new model for a long war of attrition, organized around espionage, infiltration, sabotage, proxy networks, and a revolutionary infrastructure designed to turn America against itself.” 

In March, President Donald Trump said, “Cuba is next,” while discussing the success of the U.S. military operation in Venezuela, which captured the country’s dictator, Nicolas Maduro.

When asked by the Daily Signal on a press call how this report affects plans for future military action against Cuba, a senior State Department official said, “The president keeps all his options on the table.”

“His resolve is ironclad that we will not allow this failed state, this rogue state, state sponsor of terror, to continue to threaten the American homeland,” the official said.

“All options are on the table as we continue to both engage in diplomatic negotiations with the Cuban regime and take executive action to degrade their network,” he continued, “and to ultimately bring about what should be a free and prosperous Cuba.”

The Cuban people have been held hostage by the regime, the official said. 

“This is a place that was as wealthy as Spain,” he said. “They had all of their things stolen. They had their economy plummeted into ruin. They were forcibly conscripted to go off on these ideological projects or tossed in jail.”

American universities are one of the Cuba’s top targets, “serving as fertile ground for recruiting ideologically sympathetic young Americans who will ascend to positions of influence, power, and access,” the report said. 

The official told the Daily Signal the Trump administration is taking a “whole-of-government approach to look at radical leftism and political terrorism in American universities.” 

“We have obviously revoked visas and continue to do so for all of these radical left subversives, noncitizens,” he said. 

Cuba has a relationship with anti-American forces across the world, like Russia, China, and Iran, the report says. 

“The reason that these superpowers like China have any interest in working with and supporting the Cubans, the sort of competitive advantage, the value proposition that the Cubans can go and offer to the Russians or the Chinese or the Iranians is their networks within the United States,” the official said. “First and foremost, it’s their intelligence networks.”
