Democrats Target Catholics, but Bishops Comfort Oppressors

Senior Biden Department of Justice attorneys fantasized about prosecuting Catholic nuns as they reviewed the events of the Jan. 6, 2021, protest and Capitol riot in Washington, D.C.

Realizing that there were nuns present at the peaceful rally on the National Mall that day, DOJ federal prosecutor Molly Gaston wrote that she “would like to take a special assignment of finding and prosecuting” Catholic religious sisters. One of her colleagues, Notre Dame graduate JP Cooney, replied, “I’m with you.” “Although I’d like to prosecute any nun who still wears the head habit.”

This information was just revealed by investigators working for Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and published by Mary Margaret Olohan at The Daily Wire.

Notably, Cooney is now running for the U.S. House of Representatives for the 7th Congressional District of Virginia. His comments clearly impugn the integrity of more orthodox Catholic nuns who still opt to wear traditional robes and veils, known as “habits.”

Unfortunately, this instance of anti-Catholic bias from Democrats is hardly new—or isolated. It is part of a broader War on Faith. After all, Cooney and Gaston’s boss, President Joe Biden—who has long cultivated a public image as a supposedly devout Catholic—presided as vice president over the multiyear legal assault against the Little Sisters of the Poor.

After the Obama-Biden administration tried for years to force the Catholic order to provide medical coverage that contradicts Catholic teaching, the Trump administration thankfully granted a full exemption to the nuns, who dedicate their lives to serving the poor and elderly. That exemption was also upheld by the Supreme Court in 2020.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has also displayed her own deep prejudice against Catholics, attempting as a senator to disqualify a Catholic federal judge nominee simply because he belongs to the Catholic fraternal organization the Knights of Columbus. Thankfully, she failed in this blatantly unconstitutional act of bigotry against a worthy judge who now serves on the federal bench with distinction.

In addition, the Biden FBI targeted traditional Catholics for investigation and surveillance. These patriotic citizens were singled out for the allegedly subversive and “extremist” activity of … attending Latin Mass on Sundays!

Despite this litany of abuses and clear anti-Catholic bias in the ongoing War on Faith, bishops continually insist on inserting themselves into highly partisan U.S. politics to side very publicly with Democrats. From the bishop of Rome himself, Pope Leo XIV, to various American bishops, on certain issues, these prelates seemingly take every opportunity possible to attack the church’s political protectors and join in league with the oppressors of Catholics.

For instance, even after the much-publicized online feud between Leo and Trump, the pontiff just appointed a new American bishop, Evelio Menjivar-Ayala, in West Virginia, who was, as a young man, an illegal migrant trespassing into the U.S. He ultimately received legal status through a religious visa for workers in ministry, but he openly acknowledges having crossed illegally into America.

As recently as last year, Menjivar-Ayala criticized immigration enforcement, stating that “each day this situation is getting worse and more ominous.” He also assailed what he called the “dark side of anti-immigrant animus.”

In addition, the pope also named a new auxiliary bishop for Washington, D.C., Robert Boxie III, a vocal critic of the Trump-Vance administration, especially on racial preference issues. He said that “the attacks on DEI … the fact that it’s been turned into something negative—or something that should be avoided or not talked about—just flies in the face of who we are as Americans.”

It seems far from coincidental that the Holy Father would choose to make such appointments in a deeply red, pro-MAGA state, as well as in the nation’s capital, without at least an awareness of the political symbolism following his public spat with Trump.

But inexplicably, many Church bishops default to this very pattern. They defend the oppressors of Catholics. They rally to the side that turns abortion into a pagan “sacrament” and wants to mutilate the genitals of confused children. In doing so, they invert the proper relationship between church and state: it should be leftist politicians seeking to accommodate and respect the moral teachings of the church, not church leaders appearing to bend toward secular political power.

As their excuse for joining hands with such partisan actors, the bishops pretend that porous borders are somehow moral or virtuous, defying logic and the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, especially St. Thomas Aquinas.

With these politicized moves, many bishops de facto retaliate against the masses in the pews who voted by supermajorities for strong immigration law enforcement, a principle deeply embedded in millennia of Catholic teaching and tradition. Pray that these shepherds will learn from their flock, who overwhelmingly support strong borders and an immigration model of law and order in our homeland.

Today, even with President Trump’s victory, leftist elites have their tentacles in every aspect of our government.

The Daily Signal’s own Tyler O’Neil exposes this leftist cabal in his new book, The Woketopus: The Dark Money Cabal Manipulating the Federal Government.

In this book, O’Neil reveals how the Left’s NGO apparatus pursues its woke agenda, maneuvering like an octopus by circumventing Congress and entrenching its interests in the federal government.
