Comer Targets Biden-Era DEA Policy That Allowed Fentanyl Loads to Move Unimpeded

A House committee is investigating whether a Biden-era fentanyl walking program affected more states than New Mexico and if allowing the deadly drug to flow across the border violated federal law enforcement policy.
“We’ve talked to the whistleblower that said the Biden DEA allowed for fentanyl to hit the streets presumably to try to catch a bigger dealer, but anytime you let fentanyl near the streets, people die,” House Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., told the Daily Signal in an exclusive interview.
“We saw 100,000 a year die from fentanyl during the Biden years. Part of that was, obviously, from having a border that wasn’t secure. The other part, now we’re learning, is the DEA even allowed it,” Comer added.
Starting during the Biden administration, the Drug Enforcement Administration allowed the shipments of drugs into the United States because Justice Department prosecutors wanted to build a larger criminal case against traffickers.
The operation allowed drug shipments to pass through the U.S.-Mexico border for the purpose of gathering intelligence. The operation primarily affected the Albuquerque area. The drug shipments included a single load of 74,000 fentanyl pills that was delivered to a mobile home park in Albuquerque, under the DEA’s oversight.
He said this clearly was a bad strategy.

“I don’t think the families who lost loved ones because of that will agree with that strategy,” Comer said. “We want to know if it happened in other states.”
New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez opened an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General is also investigating the DEA.
“I’ve met with the New Mexico attorney general, not about this but about other things. So I feel like we could work together,” Comer said. “I don’t think he would be supportive of allowing fentanyl into New Mexico under any circumstance.”
As with any matter, the committee can determine if policies were violated or policies need to be changed considering the lethality of fentanyl.
“Certainly, if there’s a policy that would allow for something like that, I think that needs to be revisited. If there was a, if the policy did not allow for that, which I would hope was the policy, then whoever authorized it, I think, would have their day in court.”
