Virginia Primary Results Set Up Fall Matchups

The stage is set for November’s congressional elections. The Associated Press called all of Virginia’s races less than an hour after polls closed at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

In the race for U.S. Senate, Democrat Mark Warner is attempting to win a fourth term. He ran unopposed in the primary and will square off against Republican Bert Mizusawa, who prevailed in a three-way race Tuesday. Mizusawa won more than half the vote and easily topped David Williams and Kim Farington. He retired from the U.S. Army as a major general.

The 5th Congressional District was the only one in the state with both a GOP and a Democratic primary. In the Republican race, incumbent Rep. John McGuire, who ousted Bob Good in a primary two years ago, defeated Melanie Lucero. On the Democratic side, former Rep. Tom Perriello topped Rob Tracinski and Suzanne Krzyzanowski and will seek a return to Congress.

In the 1st District, Republican incumbent Rob Wittman will face Democrat Shannon Taylor, the commonwealth’s attorney for Henrico County. She easily prevailed in a crowded field. In the 2nd District, Republican incumbent Jen Kiggans will face Democrat Elaine Luria.

In the 3rd District, Democrat Bobby Scott is seeking reelection against Republican Edwin Rivera, while in the 4th District incumbent Democrat Jennifer McClellan will face Republican Robert Murray. In the 6th District, Republican Ben Cline seeks reelection against author Beth Macy. None of these six candidates faced a primary challenge this week.

Democrat Eugene Vindman, who won his first term in 2024, was not opposed in the 7th District and will face Republican Doug Ollivant, who bested two other GOP candidates with more than 56 percent of the vote.

In the 8th District, Democrat Don Beyer is seeking a seventh term and rolled to victory in a crowded field of five candidates. He raked in more than $2.1 million for this race, more than eight times as much as his closest competitor, Adam Dunigan, raised. Beyer won two-thirds of the primary vote, while Dunigan took about 10 percent. Republican Tony Sabio ran unopposed.

Republican Morgan Griffith was unopposed in the 9th District and will face Democrat Joy Powers. Democrats look to hold on to the 10th and 11th districts in Northern Virginia with incumbents Suhas Subramanyam and James Walkinshaw, who will face Republicans Dave Beckwith in the 10th and Arthur Purves in the 11th.

This year’s primary was pushed back from June to August because of uncertainty caused by the possibility of redistricting. Voters signed off on a new map during an April referendum, but the Virginia Supreme Court later set that vote aside on procedural grounds and left all 11 districts in place.

Election Day is Nov. 3, and in addition to the congressional races, voters will be asked whether to approve three constitutional amendments.

Question 1 would: “Provide a state constitutional right to reproductive freedom, defined as ‘the right to make and effectuate one’s own decisions about all matters related to one’s pregnancy.’”

Question 2 would: “Repeal the provision defining marriage as between one man and one woman and prohibit the state from denying a marriage license to two adult persons based on sex, gender, or race.”

Question 3 would: “Provide that persons convicted of felonies have their voting rights restored upon release from incarceration.”

Early voting starts Sept. 18 and runs through Halloween.
