Minnesota Senator Announces Anti-Sharia Caucus to Protect Assimilation and America’s Identity

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—Minnesota state Sen. Michael Holmstrom is unveiling the state’s first anti-Sharia law caucus to push back against migration from countries destroyed by Islamic regimes and to address concerns about the safety of the state’s communities.

As of 2020, there were at least 140,000 Muslims in Minnesota, many of whom were foreign-born, on welfare, or unable to speak English. But what worried Holmstrom most was that some practiced Sharia customs, such as the subjection of women, female genital mutilation, or pledging allegiance to foreign organizations.

“Minnesota has had an influx of Third-World migration from countries that implement Sharia law pretty vigorously, and it degraded the community,” Holmstrom told the Daily Signal.

That led the senator to take action. This week, he is launching a caucus of state lawmakers who will work together to address that specific issue.

“We have an American identity, and assimilation isn’t being taken seriously,” he said. “We don’t believe in Sharia law. We don’t believe in genital mutilation. We don’t want to see apostates punished. And we don’t want to see that become commonplace in Minnesota.”

Aside from his concern over Sharia law and his desire to preserve proper assimilation, the senator said one of his main motivations for founding the caucus is to restore the “community cohesion” that once thrived in the North Star State.

“This used to be a community that had a ton of cohesion. People knew their neighbors and felt comfortable walking on the street,” Holmstrom continued. “St. Cloud is not what it used to be. This is a very serious issue for my constituents. They come to me and say, ‘How can we stop this?’”

Accusations of Bigotry

During the interview, the senator said Democrats argue that anybody who wants assimilation and respect for American law is a “bigot.” Fear of the label is the main reason why some heinous acts from the community go underreported, he said.

As an example, he cited the work of independent journalist Nick Shirley. When Shirley uncovered widespread fraud in Minnesota’s daycare program, food assistance programs, and health care providers, many media outlets dismissed the claims as conspiracy theories, even though some of those exposed by the journalist have admitted guilt in fraud cases.

“It’s obvious why it’s not being reported. The reporters don’t want to be called racist, and everyone is afraid of being called a bigot,” Holmstrom said. “This woke leftist mindset holds that change is inherently good, and anything different from what we have has to be better.”

He added that Republicans haven’t run a government agency with thousands of employees in Minnesota in decades, and said “radicals are running everything,” opening the door to widespread fraud. It’s all maintained through the fear of being accused of bigotry and racism, according to Holmstrom.

Despite already having been called a “bigot” for announcing the caucus, the senator says the new group will be launched later this week and will push forward with a legislative agenda.

He concluded by saying Democrats in Minnesota are not taking the issue seriously enough.

“The Democratic Party, the institution, is totally lost,” Holmstrom said. “We are dealing with people [pro-Sharia law Muslims] who are an existential threat to the American way of life. It’s not just our culture, financial system, and court system—the livelihood and enjoyment of life of every American is on the line with this issue.”
