DSA’s Dark Triumph: Socialism Surges as America Turns 250 

On the very day America marked its 250th birthday—a celebration of liberty, enterprise, and individual rights—the Democratic Socialists of America notched a grim milestone. With more than 120,000 members and chapters in all 50 states, DSA is now the largest socialist organization in U.S. history. While fireworks lit the skies, radical progressive Democrats were busy burying the republic’s founding principles under a mountain of Marxist fantasies. 

Their mission statement reads like a Soviet wish list: collective ownership of “key economic drivers” like energy and transportation and a parade of “radical” reforms—Medicare for All, defund the police, the Green New Deal—as stepping stones to their utopia.  

In their words: “The capitalist class tells us we are powerless, but together we can take back control.” Translation: The government will seize the wheel, and you’ll be grateful for the ride. 

Enter Zohran Mamdani, the self-proclaimed Muslim and “democratic socialist” who is now mayor of New York City and refuses to apologize for any of his views.  

His agenda is a masterclass in socialist delusion: rent control, “free” transportation, “free” childcare, and city-run grocery stores. He wants to hammer “whiter neighborhoods” with higher taxes, insists billionaires shouldn’t exist, and sneers at immigration enforcement. While claiming that Immigration and Customs Enforcement “is invading our streets,” Mamdani cheers the influx of third-world migrants. To him, law-abiding citizens seem to be the real problem. 

Mamdani correctly notes that many Americans struggle to afford housing, health care, and retirement. But his “cure” only worsens the diagnosis. The problem isn’t capitalism—it’s the very progressive policies that have distorted markets for decades: zoning strangleholds, endless regulation, monetary debasement, and a welfare state that rewards dependency.

Socialism doesn’t fix these failures; it supercharges them. Just ask the people of Venezuela, Cuba, or every other paradise where socialists—“democratic” or otherwise—have gained control. 

Sitting at George Washington’s desk, Mamdani sees only villains: “monopolies that dominate every industry,” “oligarchs who buy elections,” and “masked agents terrorizing our streets.”  

What he cannot see—or refuses to see—is the unparalleled engine of prosperity that has lifted more people out of poverty than any system in human history. American capitalism built the skyscrapers, the suburbs, the tech revolution, and the broad middle class that socialists now promise to “liberate” through coercion. 

This is not harmless idealism. DSA’s surge reflects a cultural capture: young generations indoctrinated in schools and universities to view their country as irredeemably oppressive and its economy as rigged.  

They reject the fundamental truth that free markets, secure property rights, and limited government have produced the wealthiest, most innovative society ever known. In its place, they offer envy dressed as justice and state power dressed as compassion. 

The danger is clear. Every expansion of government control—from nationalized industries to speech codes to confiscatory taxation—erodes the incentives, freedoms, and moral habits that sustain prosperity. Defunding the police becomes a crime wave. “Free” everything becomes national bankruptcy and rationed mediocrity. Open borders, under the guise of solidarity, lead to overwhelmed cities and fractured communities. 

America does not need a “transition” to socialism. It needs a return to its roots: constitutional limits, individual responsibility, secure borders, law and order, and the unapologetic defense of free enterprise. The DSA’s record membership on our Semiquincentennial is not a cause for celebration. It is a warning siren. 

The choice before us could not be starker: Renew the American republic of liberty, opportunity, and individual rights—or watch it dissolve into the gray, joyless egalitarianism that has failed everywhere it has been tried. Republicans in Congress can no longer manage America’s decline with polite incrementalism. With Mamdani-style socialists openly working to accelerate our downfall, half-measures are surrender.  

This is the moment to choose: Fight for the republic, or preside over its funeral.
