The Daily Signal’s Senior National Security and Legal Analyst Mehek Cooke said President Donald Trump’s endorsements in GOP congressional primaries are a reflection of the clear mandate voters gave him to deliver on core priorities such as tax relief, border security, and a stronger America.

Speaking on BBC News, Cooke described Trump’s decision to back Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Texas Republican Senate runoff as generating excitement among voters who want change. She emphasized that the focus is not simply on loyalty, but on ensuring elected officials follow through on Trump’s promises.

“President Trump weighed in because he is looking at who will move that needle and be a fighter. He didn’t want complacency. Many people in Washington on both sides of the aisle treat their positions as thrones rather than positions of leadership,” Cooke said.

Speaking of Paxton’s primary opponent, incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, Cooke said that voters grew frustrated with him during his time in Washington. “He sat there and it was too long, he continued to become too Washington and less Texas, he continued to be too liberal and not for the working class. And they wanted to change the page,” Cooke said.

That same dynamic played out in Kentucky, where Republican Rep. Thomas Massie faced a Trump-backed primary challenger after repeatedly breaking with the president’s agenda, she noted. Massie, a longtime congressman known for his independent votes, ultimately lost the primary despite building a strong brand.

Cooke said that Massie’s repeated opposition to Trump’s agenda—from legislative priorities to executive actions—“crossed a line.” She noted that the president sees certain issues, including border security and tax relief, as “non-negotiable.”

“There are some individuals in the Republican Party that are pushing against everything” that Trump promised, she said.

She framed the Kentucky primary as a major test for Republican unity. Cooke noted that Massie’s defeat underscores a broader shift within the Republican Party, where alignment with Trump’s agenda is becoming a decisive factor for political survival. As Cooke indicated, the race served as a test of Republican unity, and the result suggests voters are prioritizing Trump’s policy goals over internal dissent.

Cooke argued that Trump’s endorsements are less about punishing dissent and more about enforcing accountability. “We continue to see politicians make promises in Washington but never deliver,” she said. “President Trump is changing the name of the game. His endorsement matters now more than ever.”
