ISIS Claims Responsibility for Terrorist Attack in Iran During Soleimani Memorial Event

The terrorist group ISIS has claimed responsibility for the bombing Wednesday in Iran that killed dozens and injured hundreds.

Multiple bombs went off in the southern Iranian city of Kerman during an anniversary memorial service for Iranian terrorist Qassem Soleimani, killing at least 73 and injuring hundreds of others. [The U.S. killed Soleimani in a drone strike ordered by then-President Donald Trump.]

ISIS, also known as the Islamic State, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement the terrorist group posted Thursday.

“Yesterday, they detonated their explosive belts in the middle of the crowd, killing and wounding more than 300 polytheist Shiites,” ISIS said in the post, according to a translation provided by former U.S. State Department official Gabriel Noronha. “Praise be to God.”

Speculation had surrounded the culprit in the terrorist attacks in Kerman, with Tehran blaming both the U.S. and Israel for the attack, Iran International reported.

However, a sizable amount of the Iranian public had guessed that ISIS was behind the bombing.

The Islamic State views Iran’s overwhelming Shiite Muslim majority as promoting a lesser form of Islam and seeks to kill them for it. Iran, like most of the Western world, views ISIS as a terrorist organization and took action to destroy it in Iraq and Syria, among other regions, according to the Washington-based Wilson Center.

ISIS-Core was “the most-active terrorist organization globally” as of 2022, according to the U.S. State Department, saying the terrorist group was responsible for 535 attacks and 1,329 casualties that year.
