A Taxing Decision for LeBron James

NBA superstar LeBron James became a free agent this week, prompting speculation about where the four-time league MVP will call home next season.

James is reportedly seeking a deal worth more than $20 million per year, which could result in a sizeable income tax bill depending on his final destination. If he re-signs with the Miami Heat, James would pay no state income tax. That’s not the case for some of the other teams wooing James.

Curtis Dubay, a Heritage Foundation research fellow in tax and economic policy, helped us break down the numbers to look at the top teams in contention for James and the approximate income tax—if any—he would pay in those states.
