As the Texas gubernatorial race heats up, Gov. Greg Abbott’s campaign is targeting Democrat candidate Gina Hinojosa for her record on transgender policies in the Texas Legislature.
On Tuesday, Abbott’s campaign released a press release revealing Hinojosa’s record of supporting transgender procedures for children.
“Radical Gina would rather trans your kids than protect them, educate them, or prepare them for a successful future. It’s disgraceful,” said Eduardo Leal, press secretary for Texans for Greg Abbott. “From prosecuting parents who ‘misgender’ their own child to voting in favor of Texas public schools transitioning kids behind parents’ backs, Hinojosa is a rubber stamp for the Socialist Democrats and their gender insanity.”
The release points to multiple bills that Hinojosa voted against that Republicans said were aimed at protecting children from gender-transition procedures.
In 2023, during the 88th Regular Legislative Session, Hinojosa voted against Senate Bill 14, legislation aimed at prohibiting Texas-licensed physicians and other health care providers from knowingly providing certain gender-transition procedures and treatments to individuals under 18 years old.
The legislation specifically prohibited sterilizing minors or performing mastectomies, as well as administering puberty blockers and hormone treatments.

During the 89th Regular Legislative Session, Hinojosa also voted against House Bill 1106, a bill that protected parents from being investigated and charged with child abuse or neglect if they refused to affirm their child’s perception of his or her gender.
In the same session, Hinojosa also voted against Senate Bill 12, which places restrictions on school employees who are encouraging or facilitating a student’s social transition, including using a name or pronouns that differ from those associated with the student’s biological sex.
Abbott’s press release comes after a recent poll showed that Hinojosa has gained momentum in the race.
An Overton Insights poll released Aug. 26 shows that Hinojosa is trailing Abbott by only 2 points. Overall, polling shows that Abbott is still leading the gubernatorial race by 5.5 points.
Election Day is Nov. 3.
Hinojosa’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment by publication.
