The nation of Albania is in a crisis; America should be paying attention. Many will ask, “Why?” or “Where is Albania anyway, and why should America care?” Not only should Americans care, but we should be acting. What is happening there is a warning about what we might face here if socialism continues to rise.
Albania (found in the western Balkans, just north of Greece) was trapped under horrific communist rule from the conclusion of World War II until the early 1990s—a nearly 50-year prison sentence for more than 3 million people.
After gaining freedom, the Albanian people overwhelmingly chose to develop stronger ties with the West while cultivating self-government and a free-market economy. The nation became an early signatory of the NATO Partnership for Peace and later a full member of NATO. Albania was quick to offer military assistance to the U.S. after the 9/11 terror attacks in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
Modern Albania has been a true friend to the U.S. in every way.
Today they are again trapped under a socialist party government that is playing fast and loose with the rules of free elections and weaponizing legitimate government functions to suppress dissent and jail political opponents. The heavily entrenched government of Prime Minister Edi Rama is moving the country away from conservatism and family values (long staples of Albanian culture) by using the country as an experiment for the collectivist ideas of George Soros and his ilk.
The leader of a large coalition in Albania spoke with me on condition of anonymity about the challenges that the country faces. His name will not be used to avoid legal and political persecution. He is outside the government, is not a political figure, and is not seeking any office—just what is best for his country. He leads a multiconfessional, multiethnic civil society organization. Please read these words with your hearts and minds open to the truth he describes.

“Since May 31, protests have been taking place across the country. … [In June,] someone wearing a mask took the Israel’s flag down from the Israel Embassy. The country is suffering under rampant corruption, and … ministers of government and the mayor of Tirana are in jail for corruption. Over one million Albanians have left the country in the last [20 years] due to lack of hope.”
After spending more than two years as the first full-time American defense attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Tirana, Albania, I can attest to the veracity of these statements. The speaker is not only a nonpolitical man of integrity, but I have had all of his comments confirmed by American citizens living in Albania.
Our source also observed, “The situation has drawn significant public attention and has sparked intense debate both locally and internationally. Following the approval of the Gender Equality Law in November 2025, the LGBT movement has become increasingly active and has continued its false attacks against faith-based leaders. During the last week of May, LGBT activists [and a number of progressive organizations] filed legal complaints against various faith groups.”
They are attempting to silence anyone who disagrees with their chosen narrative. Does this sound familiar?
He also explained that “the Ministry of Health announced an order for public hospitals regarding the initiation of hormonal therapy for [those who identify as] transgenders including minors aged 13.5 to 18 years old. This would lead to the chemical sterilization of the Albanian children and would bring terrible irreversible consequences to their [lives].”
This runs afoul of the cultural foundation of every part of the historical Albanian way of life.
The source said that people have tried to use legal means of dissent.
“A large and peaceful national March for Life was organized on June 1st by the Albanian pro-life and pro-family groups. Thousands of people from different cities across Albania gathered and participated. We marched peacefully toward the Ministry of Health, carrying banners and calling for the immediate cancellation of this order. The level of participation was significant, and the march reflected a wider public concern of many citizens, seeking to protect children from the dangerous agenda. At the request of many citizens, a national petition was signed, requesting the immediate cancellation of the order and a reconsideration of the policy. The Albanian pro-life and family groups have also officially requested that the Ministry of Health order to be revoked.”
This multiconfessional response was unprecedented in modern Albanian politics and civil society. The people were speaking, but the socialist government was not listening.
“As a Coalition, we firmly believe that the protection of children is one of the most important responsibilities entrusted to us by God. This is not only a social or political issue, but also a spiritual one. The challenges that our country is facing require wisdom, discernment, and guidance that can only come from the Lord. During this challenging time, the church has stood alongside through prayer, support, and consistent encouragement, viewing this struggle as a shared calling to stand for truth and biblical values in Albania.”
To see people across religious lines standing up for their shared cultural history and their diverse faith perspectives is heartening, but it also speaks to the desperation growing in Albania.
The European Union does not seem inclined to help in this crisis; many member states seem to be enamored with the socialist experiments being conducted under Rama’s regime. Perhaps it is time for American conservatives of all sorts to voice their support for our struggling allies—and to take Albania as a warning about what our own socialists seek.
