The Trump administration announced revised dietary guidelines for Americans on Wednesday, calling it “the most significant reset of federal nutrition policy in history.”
The White House released the Dietary Guidelines for Americans for 2025–2030, which includes changes to the food pyramid that prioritize high-quality protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The guidelines urge Americans to avoid highly processed foods and refined carbohydrates
“These new guidelines recognized that whole nutrient dense food is the most effective path to better health and lower health care prices,” Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said at Wednesday’s press briefing announcing the changes.
“Protein and healthy fats are essential, and were wrongly discouraged in prior dietary guidelines,” Kennedy said. “We are ending the war on saturated fats.”
The new guidelines call for high-quality, nutrient-dense protein foods in every meal. For the first time, they call to avoid “highly processed packaged, prepared, ready-to-eat, or other foods that are salty or sweet,” as well as “sugar-sweetened beverages, such as soda, fruit drinks, and energy drinks.”
Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said that 250,000 grocery stores that accept food stamps will be required to double their stock of “healthier foods that will allow us to immediately get these better foods into all communities, but especially the most vulnerable.”

“USDA will finalize our stocking standards, which means that those businesses in America that take the SNAP benefits, what they are required to stock in order to take that benefit,” Rollins said.
The guidelines will be a foundation for many federal food programs, Rollins said.
“Their introduction marks the first step in connecting America’s schools and dinner plates to the best of American agriculture,” she said.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the new guidelines will update the food that is served to public school students, members of the military, and patients in Veterans Affairs hospitals, as well as nutritional programs for low-income Americans like WIC and Head Start.
“When these guidelines are followed, Americans will be saving themselves thousands of dollars,” Leavitt said. “If we want to help cut health care costs in our country, we must become a healthier country.”
The Trump administration believes improving the health of Americans will lower health care prices.
“The idea that processed food is cheap is an illusion, as you’re paying for it on the back end,” Kennedy added. “You’re paying for diabetes, obesity with illness, and if you internalize that cost of the meal, it would be a tiny fraction of the long term cost of eating bad food.”
“42 million Americans rely on SNAP for common purchases including sugary drinks, candy, and chips,” Kennedy said. “78% of SNAP recipients are enrolled in Medicaid, and 90% of Medicaid spending goes to chronic disease. These incentives raise health care costs and undermine health. This must change.”
Kennedy said every American should be able to afford healthy food.
“We are working on a education and information program that will allow American families all over the country to come onto our website and find healthy for the healthiest foods at the lowest cost for themselves,” he said.
