President Donald Trump signaled he is considering new controls on AI after a new OpenAI model escaped its testing lab containment and conducted more than 17,000 cyberattacks.

“We’re looking at controls,” he said in response to a question from the Daily Signal. “We’re also making sure that we lead, so we’re leading China in AI by a lot. China has virtually no controls.”

“It’s freewheeling a little bit, so we have to be careful in both ways,” Trump added. “We don’t want to restrict them where all of a sudden we come in second to China.”

Trump said whoever “wins with AI” is “going to win.”

“That’s how big it is. So it’s bigger than the internet ever was,” he said. “It’s bigger than anything ever was. So I don’t want to restrict. I know many of these people. I don’t want to restrict them from doing great work here.”

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was present in the Oval Office as Trump answered questions from reporters.

Last week, OpenAI announced that two of its most advanced models had escaped a closed testing environment and breached the AI developer platform Hugging Face. A new analysis from Hugging Face on Tuesday said two OpenAI models carried out 17,600 hacking actions on the internet between July 9 and July 13.

Trump’s recent executive order on AI security imposed a deadline of Aug. 1 for the White House to release a framework on conducting evaluations of pre-deployment AI models.

The Trump administration in June blocked two Anthropic models, Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5, from being released because of “national security concerns,” but restored access several weeks later. OpenAI said last month it would restrict the release of its new model at the Trump administration’s request.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on Wednesday that he was meeting with senators to talk about his company’s upcoming models. He told reporters on Wednesday that he discussed the hack “a little bit” with senators.

“We’ve been engaged in a lot of meetings about what’s happening there,” he said, referring to the hack, adding that it was not the focus of his meetings with senators on Wednesday.

Today, even with President Trump’s victory, leftist elites have their tentacles in every aspect of our government.

The Daily Signal’s own Tyler O’Neil exposes this leftist cabal in his new book, The Woketopus: The Dark Money Cabal Manipulating the Federal Government.

In this book, O’Neil reveals how the Left’s NGO apparatus pursues its woke agenda, maneuvering like an octopus by circumventing Congress and entrenching its interests in the federal government.
