RNC Scores Win Over Benson in Michigan Ballot Case

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson took a recent loss in a mail-in ballots case. 

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are fiercely competing for Michigan’s 15 electoral votes, separated by no more than 1% or 2% in most polls, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average. 

The Republican National Committee and the Michigan Republican Party sued over Benson’s guidance to local election officials to process and count mail-in ballots with missing stub numbers, or lacking a ballot matching number.

In an Oct. 3 ruling, Michigan Judge Brock A. Swartzle ruled that guidance must be corrected. The judge also denied Benson's motion for summary judgment.

RNC Chairman Michael Whatley posted Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter, about the victory in Michigan as well as a win in New Hampshire to ensure voter ID laws are in place. 

“Two great RNC election integrity wins,” Whatley posted. 

“1. We just won a lawsuit in Michigan that will force Jocelyn Benson to enforce basic mail ballot safeguards ahead of November 5,” the post says. “2. We just won a lawsuit in New Hampshire to ensure that voter ID is the law of the land for this election.”

As previously reported by The Daily Signal, courts have had to issue at least six orders since 2020 requiring Benson to enforce state election laws. 

“Our lawsuit was once again what it took to force Jocelyn Benson to follow Michigan’s election laws and ensure that Michiganders can be confident in our electoral process,” Michigan GOP Chairman Pete Hoekstra said in a public statement. “Ballot number matching requirements are a simple way to protect the integrity of our elections, and Michiganders deserve that peace of mind.”
