Last night, Dr. Ryan T. Anderson, the William E. Simon fellow at The Heritage Foundation, was on “EWTN News Nightly” to discuss his new report, “Always Care, Never Kill: How Physician-Assisted Suicide Endangers the Weak, Corrupts Medicine, Compromises the Family, and Violates Human Dignity and Equality.”
During the interview, Anderson explained the many policy problems with physician-assisted suicide. He noted:
Physician-assisted suicide sends the message that some people are better off dead. That’s a lie. And our culture has to resist it. We have to resist the temptation to look at the sick, or the elderly, or the disabled as if they are burdens to be disposed of. We have to view them as people to be loved and cared for.
On Monday, The Heritage Foundation and the National Review Institute are co-hosting a public event at noon, “Living Life to Its Fullest: Supporting the Sick and Elderly in their Most Vulnerable Hours.” Hosted by Anderson and National Review’s Kathryn Lopez, the event features Dr. Farr Curlin, a professor of medicine at Duke University, and Sister Constance Veit of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Both focus on caring for the elderly and the sick when death is near. The event is free and open to the public, and will stream on the Internet. Please join us.
