Lewiston, Maine, has transformed from a working-class, historic town to the gun violence capital of the state.
In his documentary “The Basilica or the Mosque—Mass Migration to Maine,” Daily Signal contributor Steve Cortes details how Somali immigrants take advantage of the American government and its people to enrich themselves and their home country.
Maine: A History and Transformation
Travel influencer Peter Santenello describes Lewiston, Maine, as the “most dangerous city in the safest state.”
According to Cortes, this dishonor can be traced to the city’s Somali immigrant community, which accounts for 6,000 of its 38,000 residents.
Unlike the French Canadians who settled the city and built wonders such as the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, the Somali population has made no effort to adapt to the American language, culture, or values.
This widespread disregard can be seen in local education outcomes.

Sixty percent of the city’s sixth through 12th grade student body is foreign-language students. Lewiston is also home to four of Maine’s 10 worst-performing English language arts schools.
Asylum-Seekers
From 2000 to 2005, the bulk of asylum-seekers were Somali immigrants, fleeing the Somali Civil War, an ongoing conflict that plunged the already poor country into swathes of warlord-controlled territories.
Under the Biden administration, asylum claims ballooned to 4 million or 5 million. These claims are meant to be petitions that the Justice Department grants or rejects. If rejected, the petitioner should then self-deport.
That doesn’t happen, according to Steve Robinson, editor-in-chief at The Maine Wire.
“There is no mechanism to remove you from the country and there is no incentive for you to leave,” Robinson says. “You’ve already been given a work authorization after six months by the federal government that’s a proxy for a social security number, so you can live and work in the United States.”
The Somali Scam
“We’re not as much concerned with the immigrant who takes advantage of a benefit program,” Robinson says. “It’s the ones who are running a business that funnel all of those people into their business and are billing $15, $20, $30 billion a year.”
Houssein Hirsi Ahmed is one of those business owners. He opened the Lewiston branch of Kah Express, now Ramad Pay, which funnels American money back to Somalia. From 2021 to 2023, he was simultaneously the finance minister of Jubaland, Somalia, a province influenced by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab.
Another Somali, Abdullahi Ali, ran for president of the same province, boasting that he used American money to fund Somali arms deals.
“I am of the opinion that it is backed by political factions in foreign countries,” Robinson says. “You can’t tell me that, if remittances from Maine and Minnesota are such a huge and important thing in your economy, that the politicians in Somalia aren’t going to do anything they can to increase that pipeline and support it and make sure more money is flowing in.”
America’s Response
It was American organizations such as Catholic Charities that first enabled this mass migration, Cortes said.
While the mainline Democrat position is to promote these permissive policies, Cortes said Americans polled in the swing state of Michigan still believe, by a 6-to-1 margin, that mass Muslim migration has gone too far.
“So, which way, America?” Cortes asked. “Will we pursue legal, limited immigration that fosters American greatness, demands self-sufficiency, and prioritizes the prerogatives of our citizens? Or will we follow Europe down a dreadful path to civilizational erasure by inviting in masses of migrants?”
