The Daily Signal today announced that Joe Thomas will be its first-ever state correspondent and that Virginia will be the first location for its expansion into the states. This hire marks the launch of the growing news outlet’s plan to establish a network of state-based journalists across the country.

Since its founding in 2014, The Daily Signal has delivered news, analysis, and commentary on political and policy issues to millions each month. As a trusted news source for members of Congress, presidential administrations, and increasingly state policymakers, The Daily Signal provides audiences with the information they need to understand the debates shaping America’s future.

Thomas, a seasoned broadcaster with decades of experience across multiple markets, will spearhead The Daily Signal’s coverage of Virginia politics and policy issues. He also represents the first step in The Daily Signal’s strategic initiative to provide more reporting on state-level governance that is often overlooked by national media outlets.

Thomas brings years of experience to the role, having hosted “First Thing Today with Joe Thomas” on the Talk Media Network; “Freedom & Prosperity Radio,” the Virginia Institute for Public Policy’s public affairs radio show; and “Joe Thomas in the Morning” and “The Afternoon Constitutional” on WCHV in Charlottesville. His broadcasting career began at WPUT-AM in Brewster, New York, and has included positions in markets such as Nassau/Suffolk, New York; Philadelphia; and a stint at New York City’s WNEW-FM.

Since 2007, Thomas has called Charlottesville home, where he has successfully revitalized a struggling radio station and guided listeners through challenging events, including the city’s turbulent summer of 2017.

In his new role, Thomas will cover political developments in Virginia, including this year’s elections, plus the policy debates in the General Assembly. He’ll also leverage his broadcasting skills to get the kinds of in-depth, sometimes rough-and-tumble, interviews with Virginia newsmakers that other media outlets often lack. His stories and interviews will be published on The Daily Signal’s website and distributed across its social media channels.

The Daily Signal’s state-based focus aims to fill a gap in the news industry by providing coverage of important policy debates happening in state capitals as well as to a national audience seeking greater visibility into decisions impacting other states and communities.
