Twitter has revolutionized how people spread news and gather information — circumventing authoritarian regimes and establishment media around the globe. It’s given a voice to the powerless — and also the powerful.

Count Donald Trump as one of its biggest fans.

“It’s like owning the New York Times without the losses, if you think about,” Trump said at a National Press Club luncheon this week.

Trump, who has more than 2.6 million followers, said Twitter allows him to make news on a moment’s notice. According to CNSNews.com reporter Penny Starr, Trump told the crowd:

I don’t do press releases. If I want a press release I just put it on Twitter and I’ve got a press release.

You’ve got millions of people watching and if I want to say something, I just put it out and, all of a sudden, I’m reading stories about it the next day. It’s really fantastic. I love it, frankly.
