Outspoken political activist and chess champion Gary Kasparov spoke out against President Barack Obama this week in a tweet reading, “I’ve said it before, but if Barack Obama had been president instead of Reagan, I’d still be a citizen of the Soviet Union.”

Kasparov, who is the Chairman of the Human Rights Foundation, was born in the Soviet Union and is a critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and ousted Ukranian President Viktor Yanukovych.

Days after the tweet mentioned previously, Kasparov tweeted, “Unlike Syrians, Ukrainians are lucky they didn’t give Obama the chance to negotiate for them. Yanukovych would be at the table, not running.”

He also noted, “Yanukovich was running, the people were fighting for freedom, & Obama was chatting with Putin. Chicken Kiev Part 2!”

In 2011, Kasparov was interviewed by The Foundry about his views on Russia’s current political climate. He said, “Corruption is not a problem [in Russia], it’s a system.”
