A pro-abortion hashtag was met with a pro-life response when it trended on Twitter Monday.

The hashtag #shoutyourabortion was created by writers Lindy West and Amelia Bonow.

The campaign to defund PP “relies on the assumption that abortion is to be whispered about.” #ShoutYourAbortion pic.twitter.com/r1ilpCVr30

Bonow told Buzzfeed that her abortion was an “incredibly positive experience” and that the hashtag was started “in order to vocally align myself with Planned Parenthood … and let other women know that I feel that our continuing pervasive silence indicates that stigma has won.” Twitter users shared their reasons for having an abortion or supporting it with the hashtag.

It’s not about glorifying abortions. It’s acknowledging that we deserve the right to manage our own wellness. #ShoutYourAbortion

It’s 2015. Woman should be allowed to talk about a medical procedure without being called barbaric or self absorbed. #ShoutYourAbortion

I haven’t had an abortion, but I would get one if I needed it, without shame. I support women and choice. #ShoutYourAbortion

I can’t believe that women have to use #ShoutYourAbortion to justify to people why they aborted their child, it is a personal choice

Pro-lifers used the hashtag to share their reasons for regretting an abortion or opposing it.
